Mobile Wallets, Explained: A Beginner’s Guide to Paying with Your Phone

Author: Chelsea Bullington, Chief Operating Officer

If you’ve seen someone tap their phone at checkout instead of pulling out a card, you might’ve wondered what’s actually happening — and whether it’s something you should try. Mobile wallets aren’t as complicated as they look, and once you understand the basics, they’re often easier than digging through your purse or wallet for a card.

What Is a Mobile Wallet?

A mobile wallet is an app on your phone (or smartwatch) that stores a digital version of your First Class Community Credit Union Visa® Debit Card. Popular options include Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay — most phones already have one built in.

Here’s the part that surprises people: your phone doesn’t actually store your card number. Instead, it creates a unique stand-in number, called a token, just for your device. Think of it like a substitute that acts on your card’s behalf — it works, but if anyone ever intercepted it, it wouldn’t reveal your real card number.

How Do You Use It?

Once your card is added, paying is simple:

  • In-store: Unlock or authenticate your phone or watch, then hold it near a payment terminal. Look for the contactless payment symbol and wait for confirmation that your payment was accepted.
  • Online: When available, choose your mobile wallet as the payment option at checkout. You can pay without manually entering your card number.
  • On the go: A compatible smartwatch with your card added to its wallet can pay on its own, even without your phone nearby.

Can You Add More Than One Card?

Yes. Mobile wallets aren’t limited to a single card — you can add multiple debit and credit cards, even from different financial institutions, and switch between them right at checkout.

  • On iPhone: Hold your phone near the terminal, then swipe to choose a different card if the one that pops up isn’t the one you want to use. You can also set a default card in the Wallet app’s settings.
  • On Android: Open your wallet app before you tap, and select which card you want active for that purchase.

Whichever card is showing on your screen at the moment you tap is the one that gets charged — so if you’re carrying more than one, it’s worth a quick glance before you pay.

Getting Started

  1. Open Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay on your device.
  2. Select “Add a card” and enter your First Class debit card details.
  3. Verify it’s really you. This step goes through SHAZAM, our card network, and happens one of two ways: a one-time text code you enter to activate the card, or a quick call from SHAZAM (usually within about an hour) to confirm the request.
  4. Once verified, your card is ready to use — no waiting for anything in the mail.

Is It Safe?

Yes — arguably safer than swiping. Since your real card number is never shared with the merchant, a breach on their end wouldn’t expose it. And because verification is required before a card activates, no one can quietly add your card to their own device.

What If You Lose Your Phone?

Losing your phone isn’t the same as losing your physical card. Mobile wallets use a unique digital card number, or token, instead of storing or sharing your actual card number.

If your phone is lost or stolen, you can use tools such as Apple’s Find My or Google’s Find Hub to lock or erase the device remotely and prevent it from being used for mobile wallet purchases. Because your physical card is separate from the digital card stored in your mobile wallet, it can generally continue to be used as usual.

However, if you are unable to lock or erase your device remotely, notice any unauthorized transactions, or other signs of account fraud, contact us right away. Additional steps, such as blocking or replacing your physical card, may still be recommended to help protect your account.

What Else Can You Add to a Mobile Wallet?

Cards are just the start. Mobile wallets can also hold things like loyalty and rewards cards, gift cards, event tickets, boarding passes, and transit passes — all in the same place as your debit card.

One newer addition worth knowing about if you’re an Iowa resident: your driver’s license or state ID. Iowa now supports adding a digital version of your license or ID to Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or Samsung Wallet, where it can be used for things like TSA checkpoints and age verification at participating businesses — without handing over your phone. Since it’s still a newer feature, the state recommends keeping your physical ID on hand as a backup for now.
